L'Ariégeoise 2026
Official march website →Wind forecast for race day
Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
Tarascon-sur-Ariège sits in the heart of the Ariège department, in the wildest and least-visited corner of the French Pyrenees. L'Ariégeoise, held on 28 June, covers 135 km and 85 km through territory that knowledgeable Pyrenean cyclists have been quietly discovering for years. It lacks the media profile of the Tourmalet or the participation numbers of the Quebrantahuesos, and that is precisely the point: uncrowded roads, spectacular gorges, dense fir forests, and an organisation scaled to match the landscape rather than a marketing target.
The route climbs to the Col de Port at 1,249 metres and the Col de Latrape at 1,098 metres, through some of the most impressive gorges in the central French Pyrenees. The passes here are demanding without being savage: sustained gradients, tight corners bordered by forest, and descents that require attention but not nerve. The 85 km option is well suited to riders who want to experience the Ariège without committing to a full mountain day. Both routes share the most scenic sections of the course.
June in the Ariège offers reasonably good cycling conditions: 18-26°C in the valley bottoms, cool on the passes, and moderate rainfall probability compared to other times of year. Wind in this region follows a typical Pyrenean pattern: the dominant SW airflow can be a headwind on northward-facing climbs and a tailwind on southward descents, depending on each pass orientation. The Col de Port is the most exposed climb on the course and the most likely to feel the S/SW wind, with possible gusts of 20-30 km/h at the top. The valley floors between the gorges are well sheltered.
Tarascon-sur-Ariège is about 90 km from Toulouse, the nearest city with an international airport. Rural accommodation in the Ariège is good quality but limited in volume, so booking ahead for late June is important. If you combine L'Ariégeoise with a couple of days riding the department's other passes, the journey from Spain or from northern France pays for itself easily.
