Paris-Roubaix Challenge 2026

Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
The Paris-Roubaix Challenge takes place on the Saturday before the professional Paris-Roubaix, one of the hardest Classics in the calendar. The Challenge uses exactly the same cobbled sectors the pros will race the following day, including the Arenberg trench, the longest and most brutal sector at 2,400 metres of uneven paving stones. This is not a mountain event, but it demands a type of suffering unlike anything else in amateur cycling.
The long distance covers around 170 km with 29 cobbled sectors totalling approximately 55 km of pavés. The short distance is around 95 km with 17 sectors. The terrain between Compiègne and Roubaix is flat with minimal total elevation, but the cobbles drain energy at a rate the altimeter does not capture. The bike shakes, the arms absorb constant impact and concentration must hold for hours. Finishing in the Roubaix velodrome and riding a lap of the track is one of the most distinctive experiences in amateur cycling.
Northern France in April has a well-earned reputation. Rain is the norm rather than the exception: in recent editions mud has been deep enough to make certain sectors nearly unrideable. When it stays dry, the northeasterly wind typical of the region in spring becomes the dominant variable. The open flat sections between cobbled sectors can produce 15 to 30 km/h headwinds that appear nowhere on the elevation profile but register just as clearly in the legs as a climb would. The organisation does not cancel for rain. If you are entering the Challenge, prepare for any conditions.
Places sell out quickly and registration opens several months in advance. The logistics hub is Compiègne for the start and Roubaix for the finish, with return bus service for participants. Bike preparation matters: wider tyres (28 mm minimum, 30 or 32 mm preferable), lower pressure and double-wrapped bar tape. Many riders rent a cobble-specific bike or use a gravel setup for this event. The experience justifies the preparation.
