The route

Ponte di Legno sits in the Tonale area north of Brescia in Alpine Lombardy. The Granfondo Gavia e Mortirolo departs from there on 28 June covering 140 km with 5,000 metres of climbing. The Passo Gavia and the Passo del Mortirolo are two of the hardest and most storied passes in the Italian Alps — names that any Giro d'Italia follower will recognise immediately. At 5,000 metres of elevation gain over 140 km, the nature of this event is clear. This is not a distance ride: it is a high-mountain test that requires specific preparation.

The Passo Gavia reaches 2,621 metres, with the final kilometres exposed and unprotected. The Mortirolo is different: lower in altitude at 1,854 metres, but with sustained sections at 18% gradient over several consecutive kilometres, making it one of the steepest passes in the Alps by average ramp angle. Both climbs demand respect at different points in the day. In June, residual snowfields can still be visible near the Gavia summit, which adds a visual element but also demands care on the descent.

June in the central Italian Alps means 20-28°C in Ponte di Legno and 4-10°C on the Passo Gavia. On the exposed final kilometres of the Gavia, with snowfields on either side and open Alpine sky above, W/NW wind can be strong: gusts of 30-50 km/h are possible at the summit and make the descent technically demanding. The Mortirolo, by contrast, is more sheltered: the extreme gradient and the low forest covering much of the climb buffer the wind. On the Mortirolo, the gradient is the challenge, not the wind. Carrying warm layers for the Gavia descent and being prepared for crosswinds is the tactical key to the day.

Ponte di Legno is a small mountain resort with enough accommodation for an event of this scale. The most practical access from outside Italy is via Milan or Brescia by air, then road north through the Valtellina or Val Camonica. Registration for this granfondo sells out well in advance, which reflects the demand among Italian and international cycling tourists. For June on the Gavia: winter-weight kit for the summit regardless of valley temperatures. Wind at 2,600 metres does not accommodate light summer kit.
