The route
The Occident Bilbao-Bilbao reaches its 37th edition in 2026, and it has earned its place as one of the most traditional sportives in the Spanish calendar. The ride starts and finishes in Bilbao, with no timing, no race numbers, and no goal other than enjoying a day on the bike with thousands of other cyclists. The atmosphere is more village festival than sporting event, which is exactly the point. Three distances — 125 km, 115 km, and 85 km — give every rider a sensible option.
The route has no single defining summit. Instead, it strings together a series of mid-mountain Basque climbs, each between 400 and 600 metres of elevation gain, that stack up relentlessly through the day. The toughest part is not any individual climb but the accumulation of all of them on a March day when your legs have not yet found their spring form. The most rewarding stretch is the contrast between the misty green interior valleys and the final sections running alongside the estuary, with views out over the Cantabrian coast.
March in Bilbao means temperatures of 8 to 14°C, frequent cloud, and a high chance of rain that is best accepted rather than hoped away. The dominant wind is from the SW, driven by Atlantic fronts, and coastal or estuary sections can see gusts of 20 to 30 km/h — noticeable if you are running deep-section wheels. The interior valleys are more sheltered, with winds typically around 10 to 15 km/h. The sections leaving Bilbao and returning along the estuary are where wind has the most impact: depending on the exact front direction, you will face a headwind or crosswind in those exposed stretches.
Registration opens at bilbaobilbao.com and tends to fill within a few weeks of opening, so check the site as soon as dates are announced. Bilbao has good rail connections from across northern Spain and Madrid, and accommodation in the city centre is plentiful. Kit for the day: a thermal base layer, gloves, overshoes, and a light waterproof stuffed in your back pocket are close to mandatory in March. The Basque roadside crowd cheers at every climb, which counts for more than you would expect three hours in when the rain starts.
