The route

The Challenge Algairén BTT takes you into the rolling terrain of central Aragon, where limestone hills and open valleys define the landscape around La Almunia de Doña Godina. This region sits at the crossroads between flatter agricultural land and the beginnings of more substantial elevation, making it ideal for mountain biking that rewards both technical skill and endurance.

Saturday's individual time trial covers 15.2 km with 443 m of climbing spread across the route. You'll face consistent elevation gain without extreme pitches, which means pacing matters as much as power. Time trials here demand steady effort and smart line choices on the terrain. The format isolates you against the clock, so every meter of vertical gain becomes personal business between you and the landscape.

Sunday offers two options. The longer stage covers 54.2 km with 1228 m of elevation across the full distance. This extended route takes you deeper into the character of the region, with climbing distributed throughout rather than stacked in one section. You'll experience the rhythm of the terrain as it alternates between ascent and recovery sections. The shorter variant at 31.6 km and 565 m elevation still captures the essence of the terrain but compresses the experience, making it accessible to riders seeking a solid challenge without the full endurance demand.

Wind here tends to move from the northwest across open stretches, so expect it to build through the day as temperatures rise. Early morning starts offer calmer conditions. The limestone terrain drains quickly after rain, so even wet weather doesn't necessarily mean muddy trails for long. Visibility across the open hills is generally excellent, which helps with line selection and forward planning on descent sections.

The elevation profile varies between gentle climbs and steeper pitches depending on which variant you ride. Neither the Saturday nor the Sunday stages feature extreme gradients, but the cumulative vertical gain demands respect. Shorter, punchy climbs alternate with longer grinding sections. Recovery sections exist, but few are purely flat, so maintain focus throughout.

Terrain changes from hardpack to rocky sections as you gain elevation. Technical ability matters on descents, where you'll navigate through stone and loose material. The landscape opens up considerably, offering views across the surrounding hills and valleys. This exposure brings wind, so anticipate gusts on exposed ridges and be prepared for direction changes as you move between sheltered and open terrain.
