The route
The Epic Gran Canaria long route takes you on a 112 km loop from Maspalomas across terrain that defines this Atlantic island. You'll start from the southern coast and move through the varied landscape that makes Gran Canaria such a demanding ride. The route follows paths that climb and descend through the interior, mixing coastal approaches with inland sections that test your legs and lungs in equal measure.
The geography here is dramatic. You begin near sea level and the ride takes you inland where elevation changes become the story. The terrain shifts from flatter coastal areas into rolling slopes, then steeper pitches as you push deeper into the island. These aren't sustained climbs in one direction, but rather a series of rises and descents that demand constant attention and pacing. The surface varies between asphalt and firmer tracks, all rideable on a gravel or adventure bike setup.
Wind matters on this island. February conditions bring Atlantic swells and variable wind patterns. Expect stronger winds on the exposed higher sections and on any terrain facing the northern and northeastern approaches. The coast can funnel wind in specific directions, so pay attention to which way you're heading at each stage. Early in the route, as you move away from the protected south coast into more open terrain, the wind tends to freshen. Mid-route, on higher plateaus, you may face headwind that will slow your progress noticeably. The return toward Maspalomas can offer assistance if the wind patterns align, but don't count on it. Ride the early kilometers at a steady pace and save energy for the sections where you'll be fighting elements.
The 112 km distance demands respect for pacing and nutrition. This is not a sprint. The constant rolling nature of the terrain means your heart rate stays elevated throughout. Bring more water and fuel than you think necessary, as resupply options across the interior can be sparse. The variety of elevation changes means you'll shift between seated climbing and standing efforts repeatedly, which taxes your body differently than a long flat ride.
The landscape itself is your companion here. You move through volcanic geology, past vegetation adapted to Atlantic conditions, and along views that shift from interior ridges to distant sea horizons. The light in February is clear and direct, so sun protection matters even on cooler days.
