TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador 2026
Official march website →Wind forecast for race day
Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
The TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador takes place each September in Oliva, on the Valencia Costa Blanca, and has one feature few sportives can match: roads closed to traffic in the area where dozens of professional WorldTour teams base their winter training camps. The roads between Oliva, Gandia, Dénia and the inland Alicante passes are the same ones used by teams like UAE Team Emirates and Ineos to build their season fitness. Riding them in a closed-road event is the most accessible way to feel what training like a professional actually means.
The 147 km route with 2,534 metres of climbing starts from the Oliva Nova resort, close to the sea, and heads inland through medium-mountain passes with steady gradients and tight corners. There is no single decisive Pyrenean-style summit, but a series of linked climbs that continue for over 100 km. The road surface is in excellent condition, maintained by the constant use of professional teams. The final descent back toward the Mediterranean is one of the most welcome moments of the day.
September on the Costa Blanca offers very favourable cycling conditions. Temperatures range from 22 to 30°C, sunshine is reliable and the morning wind is typically a light sea breeze. On the inland passes, the north-south orientation of several sections exposes riders to thermal crosswinds generated by sun-heated slopes. Gusts of 10 to 20 km/h on the climbs are common. The return leg toward the coast, particularly if a levante easterly is present, can bring a tailwind for the final 30 km.
Alberto Contador is usually present at the event, which makes it more than a race: there is an expo, activities, and a realistic chance of meeting one of the greatest cyclists in history. Registration is direct through the official website with no ballot, though places sell out. The Oliva Nova resort has its own hotel complex next to the start line, which makes weekend logistics simple.
