Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
Gran Fondo Jaén Paraíso Interior takes place on 14 February in Úbeda, a UNESCO World Heritage Renaissance city that already sets this event apart before you even clip in. What makes it distinctive is the mix of road and dirt: 111 km of total distance with 19.7 km of gravel and earth sectors threading through olive groves, ravines, and the rolling hills of the Sierra de Cazorla and the Guadalquivir valley. The comparison with the Italian Strade Bianche is inevitable, and while the scenery is different, the logic is similar: dirt sectors that demand focus and break the rhythm, a blend of technical skill and endurance, and weather as a constant factor.
The 111 km route mixes minor roads with those earth sectors that form the heart of the event. The hardest stretches combine slope and loose surface, where the line narrows and grip drops. The olive groves of the comarca seem to stretch forever and frame most of the ride. There are no major mountain passes, but the terrain is far from flat: the profile is rolling, with short, repeated ramps that accumulate fatigue quietly. The total elevation gain is moderate but relentless, and arriving at the dirt sectors with legs still working is very much part of the strategy.
February in Jaén has its own weather logic. Mornings can be genuinely cold, 2-8°C at the start, with possible valley fog in the lower sections. As the day progresses, the sun usually wins and temperatures climb to 10-15°C. The main risk is not cold but mud: if it has rained in the days before, the dirt sectors become a very different experience, with sticky mud that gets into everything. The prevailing wind in this region in winter is from the NW, moderate but steady at 15-25 km/h on open stretches. The olive trees are low, barely a metre and a half tall, and offer no shelter from wind. On the uphill dirt sectors with crosswind, bike handling becomes genuinely tricky. On the passes through the Sierra Sur, wind can reach 25-30 km/h with gusts that push you off your line on loose ground.
Registration is handled through clasicajaen.com. Úbeda has decent accommodation for its size, though Valentine's Day weekend can bring extra tourist demand, so booking ahead is wise. The key preparation difference compared to a pure road sportive is equipment: 28-32 mm tyres with a mixed tread are strongly recommended, and if you ride a traditional road bike, drop your pressure by 15-20 PSI from your usual tarmac setting. Bring a long-sleeve jersey for the start even if the forecast promises midday sun: the temperature swing from a cold morning to the dirt sector hours later can exceed 10°C.
