The route

The Haimar Zubeldia Klasikoa is the headline single-day cyclosportive of the year in Gipuzkoa: 160 km and 2,475 metres of climbing starting and finishing in Zarautz, organised by Zarauzko Zikloturista Elkartea in honour of former pro rider Haimar Zubeldia. On 31 May 2026, at 8:00 in the morning, 1,000 cyclists roll out of the municipal sports hall to ride the secondary roads of inland Gipuzkoa. It is not a race — traffic is open and there is a 13:15 time cut at Landeta based on a 22 km/h average — but the profile makes it one of the hardest single-day events on the Basque calendar.

The course links five climbs in growing tactical severity. After a coastal warm-up along the N-634 through Zumaia and Zestoa, Iturburu (km 40, 6.7 km at 4.9 %) sets the tone. Soon after comes Santa Ageda Gaina (km 47, 2.8 km at 8.5 %): a short, dry, explosive climb where the first split usually happens. Mandubia (km 66, 4 km at 5.8 %) arrives when legs are already burned and separates the comfortable group from the strong group. Atagoiti (km 84, 9.3 km at 3.4 %) is long and shallow but psychologically tough because it comes at 80 km in. And Etumeta (km 125, 4.7 km at 7.3 %) is the final test: a short, mean climb right when cumulative fatigue makes every extra percent feel double.

The wind in Gipuzkoa is bipolar and that is exactly what MoguWind helps you anticipate for this event. The Zarautz start usually has a light north-northwesterly sea breeze; during the first half, in the closed valleys of the Urola and Goiherri, the wind funnels and feels milder. But from midday onward the marine breeze strengthens as the sun rises and the inland air pushes back. Atagoiti, with its 9 km of climbing on the west-facing slope, can become a headwind tunnel if the Cantabrian breeze has set in. And on Etumeta, exposed and north-facing, the afternoon wind decides whether you arrive fresh or crawling. Reading the per-section forecast before you start is not a luxury; it is strategy.

Logistics: start from Zarautz Municipal Sports Hall at 8:00 on Saturday 31 May. Official feed stations at Salbatoreko Kruzea (km 72, after Mandubia) and Landeta (km 116, before Etumeta), plus the finish. Commemorative Etxeondo jersey. Registration 52 € for federated riders, 67 € otherwise, via RockTheSport, capped at 1,000 participants. The Klasikoa is ridden, not raced, but 2,475 m of climbing does not forgive — prepare it specifically. MoguWind shows the forecast wind profile at each of the five summits so you can decide whether to pack arm warmers for the Atagoiti descent or skip the gilet on Etumeta.
