Official march website →Wind forecast for race day
Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
La Ciclobrava coincides with the Sea Otter Europe trade fair in Girona, the city that over recent years has established itself as the cycling capital of Spain and one of the main hubs of European professional cycling. Three distances are offered: 150 km, 100 km, and 70 km. The route leaves Girona and explores two very different territories: the Costa Brava with its coves, stone villages, and roads that climb and drop without warning, and the Girona pre-Pyrenees with its cork oak forest corridors and moderate cols. It is a sportive with a strong visual personality.
The Costa Brava has a specific profile: no major climbs, but the coastal roads accumulate elevation steadily through constant short, sharp ramps. Villages like Begur, Pals, Tamariu, and Llafranc appear along the route and the temptation to stop and look at the sea is understandable. The Girona pre-Pyrenees on the return to the city offers longer stretches of cork oak forest and quieter roads. Girona itself, with its medieval old town and the painted houses along the Onyar river, is a destination in its own right.
September in Girona is meteorologically calm. The Tramuntana that dominates in winter and spring is not typical in September. The prevailing wind is a gentle SW or near-calm, making September days very pleasant for riding. The Costa Brava coastal sections can carry a sea breeze from the E/SE at 10-20 km/h in the afternoons, particularly in the more open coves facing east. Temperatures between 22 and 28°C, late Mediterranean summer at its best. September is consistently one of the best weeks of the year for riding anywhere in Girona province.
Girona has its own airport (GRO) with flights from several European cities, which makes arriving from outside Spain straightforward. Sea Otter Europe week is one of the busiest of the year in the city, drawing exhibitors, brands, professional teams, and thousands of cyclists from across Europe. Booking accommodation months in advance is essential. If you can stay for several days, the roads around Girona are an absolute reference for cycling.
