Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
La Remences reaches its 29th edition, making it one of the most established cyclosportives in Catalonia. The start is in Sant Esteve d'en Bas, a village in the Garrotxa volcanic zone with all the character the region is known for: basalt, beech forest, Romanesque churches. Two distances are on offer: 175 km with 2,600 m of climbing and 100 km with 1,280 m. The long route is genuinely demanding, with a profile that accumulates elevation consistently throughout the day.
The route climbs from the Garrotxa towards the Collsacabra plateau and the Plana de Vic, crossing the threshold that separates the volcanic lowlands from the interior plain. The Collsacabra is a raised plateau with sheer cliffs dropping down to the Garrotxa below, and viewpoints like the one above Tavertet are worth the climb on their own. The Plana de Vic, sitting at around 500 m, is the open section of the route before the return descent into the Garrotxa. The 100 km option shortens the Plana section and cuts the longest climbs.
May in the Garrotxa is relatively settled weather-wise, but the Plana de Vic is an open basin where wind has room to build. Tramuntana can drop through the Collsacabra cols and affect the Plana sections at 20-30 km/h from the north, particularly in the first half of the morning. In the Garrotxa itself the wind is lighter, as dense vegetation and the volcanic hillsides shelter the valleys. SW wind from the Vallès can appear on the more exposed sections of the Plana as the day progresses. Temperatures between 15 and 22°C make this Catalan interior spring riding at its best.
Sant Esteve d'en Bas is in the Garrotxa, five kilometres from Olot and easily reached from Vic via the Vall d'en Bas road. The area has a strong rural tourism offer and accommodation demand in May is already noticeable. The name of the event references the remences, the medieval Catalan peasants who led agrarian revolts in the 15th century, a chapter of Catalan history that deserves to be better known.
