Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
The Larra-Larrau is a long-distance cycling march based in Isaba, in the Pyrenean foothills of Navarra, Spain. The event takes place in September, though the exact date has not yet been confirmed. This is a single-variant event: riders tackle one extended route of 146 kilometres.
The route unfolds through some of Spain's most dramatic mountain terrain. Starting from Isaba, you move through a landscape of steep valleys and high passes that define this corner of the Pyrenees. The geography here is relentless—expect constant climbing and descending as the route traces ridgelines and crosses into remote valleys. The terrain is mostly paved, which means solid traction but also exposure to the elements. This is not a flat march.
The Pyrenean setting brings wind patterns you need to understand. In September, the Atlantic weather systems still push moisture and wind across these mountains. The high passes funnel air flow into predictable channels, so watch the direction you're climbing. Westerly winds are common, which means you'll feel them more sharply on exposed ridges and when crossing open high ground. Morning winds tend to be calmer, so an early start gives you steadier conditions for the first climbs. By afternoon, the wind often picks up as the day warms and pressure patterns shift. Shelter comes in the deeper valleys, but on the higher sections you are fully exposed.
The altitude here matters. Even though exact elevation data is not confirmed, know that you will spend significant time above 1000 metres. Thinner air means your body works harder, and wind feels stronger. Dress in layers because mountain weather changes fast. A clear morning can turn cloudy and cool within hours. The exposure on high ground is real—wind chill is a factor, not just temperature.
This is a self-supported event in its current format. Bring enough water and nutrition to cover long stretches between villages. The route takes you through small settlements, but not frequently. The landscape is beautiful and remote, which also means it is quiet and isolated. That beauty comes with responsibility. Mechanical trouble on a high pass requires self-sufficiency or a long walk down.
The 146-kilometre distance is substantial and the terrain is challenging. This is not a casual weekend ride. Training should include sustained climbing and endurance work. Test your bike and nutrition strategy beforehand, especially if you are not used to thin air and mountain wind.
