Official march website →Wind forecast for race day
Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
The Comunidad de Madrid 7 Picos reaches its fifth edition starting from Buitrago de Lozoya, a walled medieval village in the Lozoya Valley at 1,000 m altitude in the Madrid northern sierra. Two distances are available: 145 km (7 Picos) and 73 km (4 Picos). The seven peaks of the name are the Guadarrama Sierra cols the long route crosses: Somosierra, Navafría, Canencia, Morcuera, La Morcuera, Los Cotos, and El Paular. It is one of the most mountain-intensive sportives on the Madrid calendar.
The 145 km route strings together the Guadarrama cols from the north, which means most of the climbs are tackled on their harder, less-travelled side. Somosierra (1,444 m) and Navafría (1,776 m) are the highest and longest. The Canencia, Morcuera, and Los Cotos cols are shorter but not trivial. The 73 km route selects the four most accessible passes for riders who want the event atmosphere without the full volume.
The NW wind that channels through the Guadarrama cols is the most relevant weather factor for this ride. Somosierra and Navafría, both with a broadly N-S orientation, are the most exposed: wind is funnelled down the valleys and can reach gusts of 25-35 km/h in the final kilometres of each climb. Navafría at 1,776 m is where the effect is most pronounced. May in the Madrid northern sierra brings temperatures of 12-20°C in the valley, but on the passes above 1,500 m it is genuinely cold, and with wind it becomes one of the key limiting factors of the day. Cold mornings are certain: bring gloves and a base layer for the first hour.
Buitrago de Lozoya is around 75 km from Madrid on the A-1. The village has real character with its medieval walls and small Picasso museum. The Madrid northern sierra has a good rural accommodation offer around the Lozoya valley, and 9 May in spring is a pleasant time to stay for the weekend. On the 145 km route, managing the cold on the high passes is as important as the physical preparation.
