The route
The Mallorca 312 is Spain's most demanding international cyclosportive and one of the most sought-after entries in the world. At 312 kilometres and over 5,000 metres of climbing on closed roads through the Serra de Tramuntana, the Sold Out sign appears within hours of registration opening each year. Shorter options exist at 225 and 167 km, but the full 312 is what draws riders from 60 countries to Mallorca in the last week of April.
The route starts and finishes at Platja de Muro in the north of the island, looping through the toughest climbs in the Tramuntana: sa Calobra with its 9.5 km at 7% average, Coll de Puig Major, Sóller, Coll de Sóller and several more. There are no flat recovery sections to speak of. The road surface is excellent throughout. The challenge of the 312 is not one decisive climb but the accumulation: by kilometre 200 the legs feel the weight of everything before.
Wind is the most unpredictable variable in the Mallorca 312. The Tramuntana massif channels the northerly wind of the same name, which in April can blow at 20 to 40 km/h, particularly on the north-facing slopes. The flat section between Pollença and Alcúdia, fully exposed to the north, can turn into an unexpected battle if the Tramuntana is blowing head-on. Early starters typically face lighter conditions: gusts tend to build from midday onward, so how you manage the first 100 km shapes what the last 100 feel like.
Entry is managed through a ballot or via affiliated clubs. Full 312 places sell out within hours of opening. If you are targeting the 312 for the first time, the most realistic approach is to register for the 167 or 225 in the same year you enter the ballot. Mallorca's cycling infrastructure makes logistics straightforward: accommodation, mechanics and bike rentals are available across the island, and the islanders are thoroughly used to cyclists arriving in large numbers every spring.
