The route

Mussara Salou Costa Daurada reaches its 12th edition with a distinctive claim: it is the cyclosportive with the highest female participation rate in Europe. The start is in Salou, on the Tarragona Costa Daurada, and the route climbs towards the Mussara, the Muntanyes de Prades, and the Priorat wine region. Two distances are available: 182 km and 108 km. The scenery changes completely within a few kilometres: from the beaches and hotels of Salou to the Priorat vineyards on their steep slate slopes above the rivers.

The route gains altitude steadily from the coast to the Muntanyes de Prades cols, which range from 600 to 1,000 m. La Mussara, the highest and most characteristic point at 1,020 m, offers sea views on clear days. The Priorat sections have a distinctive profile: narrow roads, short sharp ramps between century-old vines, and a density of tight corners that rewards careful reading. The return descent to Salou drops altitude quickly and the coastal sections are ridden with the Mediterranean in view.

Wind on this route has two distinct personalities. In the morning, the south or southeast sea breeze from the Mediterranean can provide a tailwind for the first kilometres out of Salou: 10-18 km/h from the SE pushing northward. On the Muntanyes de Prades cols the NW wind is moderate at 10-20 km/h, less intense than in more exposed areas. The return section towards Salou, with the Mediterranean ahead, typically has a Levante (easterly) sea breeze that can reach 15-25 km/h in the middle of the day, often hitting you directly in the face. May in Tarragona, with temperatures of 18-24°C, is one of the best times of year to ride in the area.

Salou has abundant accommodation of all types given its tourism profile, and finding a hotel or apartment is straightforward even with late booking. Direct train connections from Barcelona run to Tarragona-Cambrils (around 75 minutes). On the 182 km route, the return Priorat section with tired legs already in the bank is where the ride is won or lost: keep something in reserve for that part.
