Sierra Nevada Límite Gran Fondo 2026
Official march website →Wind forecast for race day
Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
Cenes de la Vega sits 5 km from Granada at 680 metres above sea level, right at the foot of Sierra Nevada. From there, the Sierra Nevada Límite Gran Fondo departs on 11 July on routes of 145 km and 114 km. The name is accurate: the objective is the Alto de Veleta, just above 3,000 metres, the second highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula. The road to Veleta is fully paved and used by professional teams for their altitude training camps. There are not many sportives anywhere in the world that take amateur riders to that elevation. This is one of them.
The climb from the vega to the Alto de Veleta is long and continuous on the Sierra Nevada road, with a sustained average gradient that never lets up but avoids extreme ramps. The landscape changes in stages as you climb: the olive groves and the Granada plain drop away, then the pine forest takes over, then high-mountain rock and sky above 2,500 metres. The descent requires focus, particularly on the exposed sections where wind can push you around.
July in Sierra Nevada has one of the most extreme thermal gradients in Europe. You will leave Cenes de la Vega in 35-40°C heat. At the Alto de Veleta, temperatures will be 5-12°C. On the same morning, the same ride. The wind pattern follows the thermals: in the morning, warm air rises up the southern slopes and can give you a helpful push on the climb. By afternoon, it reverses to a descending wind that becomes a headwind on the way down. At the summit, W/NW gusts of 30-50 km/h are entirely possible even when the day started calm. A warm layer for the descent is not a luxury.
Cenes de la Vega is minutes from Granada, which has its own airport and high-speed rail connections to Madrid. For this event, clothing logistics matter as much as training: extra water for the July heat on the way up, warm layers for the Veleta, and a healthy respect for summit wind even when the forecast looks clear. July guarantees dry conditions, not easy ones. The Sierra Nevada Límite is the kind of ride people talk about for years.
