Official march website →Wind forecast for race day
Weather forecast starts being reliable around 7 days out. As the date gets closer you will see wind, temperature and rain chance over the route here. In the meantime, see below how the weather behaved in past editions.
The route
The Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote reaches its third edition in a two-stage format, 115 km on the first day and 74 km on the second, covering the complete circuit of the volcanic island. Lanzarote is a cycling environment completely unlike anything on the mainland: black lava fields, malpaíses, vineyards beneath craters, the Caldera de los Cuervos, the Mirador del Río above the La Bocaina strait with La Graciosa island beyond. A small island but with an extremely high visual density.
The two stages divide the island so that the complete two-day route covers it from north to south and east to west. The climb to the Mirador del Río (479 m) on the first stage is the highest and most exposed point of the entire event: the road ascends the Famara, Lanzarote's great northern cliff, with the drop on one side and the north wind directly ahead. The Timanfaya lava fields, the island's most volcanically active zone, appear on the second stage. The terrain is rolling but rarely exceeds 400 m, which does not mean it is easy.
The NE trade wind (alisio) is the dominant wind in Lanzarote year-round, and October is no exception, though it is somewhat more moderate in this month than in summer. Under normal October conditions, the alisio blows at 15-25 km/h from the NE. The northern sections of the island, particularly the climb to the Mirador del Río and the Orzola road, are the most exposed to the alisio and can carry 25-35 km/h directly head-on or as a crosswind. The south of the island is more sheltered by the topography and wind is lighter. The descent from the Mirador del Río is one of the most spectacular sections of the ride but also the most exposed to the north wind. Temperatures of 22-28°C make October one of the best months to ride in Lanzarote.
Lanzarote has an international airport 5 km from Arrecife with direct flights from across Europe. The island is well set up for cycle tourism with good bike hire and sports logistics infrastructure. Club La Santa in the north of the island is one of the best-known cycling training centres in Europe. If you can stay for a week, the Lanzarote roads offer far more than just the two stages of the race.
