MoguWind

Cycling route planner

Draw your route or upload your GPX and see the wind you will actually get at every kilometre, at the exact time you will be there. Elevation profile, GPX download and an interactive map. Free, with no sign up.

Wind never shows up on the elevation profile

You can see a climb coming. It is on the map, it is on the elevation profile, and you know roughly what it will cost you. Wind shows up nowhere until you are already in it, and on a flat 80 kilometre ride it can take more out of you than any climb on the route.

MoguWind Plan combines your track with the weather forecast and tells you, kilometre by kilometre, where the wind is coming from relative to your direction of travel. Not just the speed. Also whether it will be a headwind, a tailwind or a crosswind, which is what really decides how hard that section will feel.

That gives you three decisions to make before you leave. Which direction to ride the route, what time to start, and which kilometres you need to hold something back for. Weather data comes from Open-Meteo.

Everything you need to plan your ride

Draw your route on the map

Build the route point by point on an interactive map, with automatic routing for road, gravel or mountain bike. If the route already exists, upload the GPX and it gets the same analysis without redrawing anything.

Wind, kilometre by kilometre

The part you will not find in other planners. For every section you get the forecast wind speed and whether it is a headwind, a tailwind or a crosswind, along with the estimated time you will reach it.

Elevation profile

Total elevation gain and the full profile of the route, so you can line the climbs up against the windy sections before you commit to the ride.

Download the GPX

Export the track as a GPX file and load it onto your Garmin, your Wahoo or whatever app you use. One click, no account, no email address.

How to plan a cycling route step by step

  1. Put the route in

Draw it on the map point by point or upload a GPX you already have. Pick road, gravel or mountain bike so the routing matches how you are going to ride it.

  2. Pick the day and the time

This is the step most people skip. The forecast changes a lot over a few hours, so leaving at eight and leaving at eleven can be two different rides on the same roads.

  3. Read the wind map

Work along the track and find the sections where you are riding into it. Pay most attention to the ones near the end, when you are already hours in and your head is going worse than your legs.

  4. Adjust and download

Flip the direction, move the start time or reshape the route until the hard sections land where you want them. Then export the GPX and go ride.

When to eat, with the wind already in the maths

Most nutrition plans are worked out from distance or from hours in the saddle. The problem is obvious as soon as you stop and think about it. Ninety minutes into a headwind does not cost the same as ninety minutes with a tailwind, even though both take up the same space on the map.

MoguWind Plan estimates the real effort of each section with the forecast wind included, and works out when to eat and when to drink from that. It comes from the specific route you just planned and the time you are setting off, not from a generic table.

From the planner to your Garmin

The planner is for the day before. For the ride itself there is a free app for Garmin bike computers and watches that shows the wind in real time while you ride, with the headwind or tailwind component and the crosswind component in kilometres per hour.

When you finish, it writes the wind data into the FIT file, so in Garmin Connect you can see what actually happened and compare it with what you planned. Both tools are free and work on their own, you do not need to use both.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use the planner?

No. There are no accounts, no subscriptions and no forms. You open it, build the route, check the wind and download the GPX.

Is it completely free?

Yes, all of it. There is no paid tier and no limit on how many routes you plan.

Can I upload a GPX I already have?

Yes. Upload the file and you get the wind analysis on that route without drawing it again.

Where does the wind data come from?

From Open-Meteo as the main source, with OpenWeatherMap as a backup.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It is built to work just as well on a phone as on a desktop.

Does it work for gravel and MTB?

Yes. Pick the bike type and the routing adapts to the terrain.
